Chinese Martial Arts Classes

The founding purpose of the Wudang Research Association was to publish materials, promote research, and teach classes on the subject of traditional Wudang Martial Arts. Originally established in China during the 1980's to promote research into the philosophy and practice of traditional Wudang martial arts, the company was registered in the United States in 1996. In 2000, we expanded our offerings to provide services based on our core experience and skills. But we remain true to our founding purpose: to teach, study and promote research on the subject of traditional Chinese martial arts.

Our teaching philosopy is based on modifided traditional methods and practices. Since most students nowadays are not willing to devote themselves to practice in the same way as students in earlier times, we have made some adjustments to our teaching methods. However, we retain the fundamental principles that the student must work hard, demonstrate good character, treat others with consideration, and respect the teacher. The teacher also has responsibilties toward the student. As the student makes progess, the teacher gives instruction and makes corrections. In this way, the teacher and the student work together to preserve and develop the arts.

Our classes emphasize traditional theories in accord with the classical teachings of Chinese martial arts. As with all our classes, we believe that without a firm foundation, anything that is built will sooner or later fall. This is especially true in the martial arts. If the student cannot learn balance, placement, coordination, and correct breathing for solo practice, how can there be any progress? Learning in the martial arts is the same as with other arts. It is not conceptual, get-it-now learning. It is developmental. Just like a two-year-old child cannot run a marathon, neither can a beginning student suddenly gain the skills to apply a movement. This takes time, practice, and perseverance. This is the true meaning of "gong fu."
