Websites used to be mostly about pages. Not anymore. There are few web sites today that don’t have some sort of content management system. That goes double for any of the ecommerce software whether it’s a corporate ERP system ported to the web or a home-grown app for the local bodega. The foundation of these systems is the database that stores the information. How the data is structured can aid or limit what can be done with it. The Metadata defined will determine the sorts of aggregate queries that can be performed.
How the front end interacts with the database, what options are available to the user, and what the software is supposed to do all matter. Especially communication and tracking progress with remote teams, it’s useful to have a design document that outlines the features, data, use, and user interactions or a MVP or even a prototype that’s ready to scale.
